It was part of the launch catalog for the Xbox 360 and is the continuation of Project Gotham Racing 2 – one of the most successful driving titles on the original Xbox. Even though it’s more of the same as its predecessor, making the leap to a new generation of consoles is never easy. It must be said that given the scope and nature of the content, it seems the developers played it safe and focused their efforts mainly on the technical aspect.
The Flair: E
The technical aspect is of great quality and undeniably justifies the leap to the new generation. The detail in the vehicles and the environments, as well as the lighting effects and vehicle sounds, are impressive, and the soundtrack is a collection of excellent songs that complement the adrenaline and speed mood. The only downside is the menus and user interface, which don’t quite match the rest.
The Feel: D
The PGR formula is quite curious, as it combines arcade elements like maneuvers and kudos with very realistic and strict driving simulation. The truth is that the gameplay is very polished, and it’s very satisfying to compete, as the game extends a hand to less experienced players while providing great challenges for hardcore ones, thanks to a versatile and well-thought-out difficulty system. My opinion is that for being such a highly realistic game with racing simulator elements, it lacks depth, and for being a game where arcade elements and skills play a part, it has too much realism. I know many people love this saga, so it’s probably a matter of taste. Either way, PGR3 is excellent in terms of the gameplay experience.
The Fuel: A
The game clearly shows its shortcomings in terms of content. It was likely very focused on the multiplayer experience, but this doesn’t justify having such a limited single-player mode. The number of cars and especially the competitions and circuits is truly insufficient, and compared to older titles like Gran Turismo 2 and 3, they far surpass it in terms of the size and depth of the single-player mode. Fortunately, the cities and cars included, despite being few in number, are of high quality.

Conclusions
Project Gotham Racing 3 is a very high-quality title, both in its technical aspect and in the experience it provides to the player, and it certainly more than fulfilled its role of bolstering the Xbox 360 launch catalog with “new-gen” effect titles. However, as a successor to PGR2 and especially considering the limited content for single-player modes, it falls short and doesn’t reach the heights it deserved.
